Not everything that glitters is Gold // The Weekly Update #4

In the past weeks I’ve probably made a few of you guys become very jealous because of all these wonderful pictures from Rio de Janeiro and the waterfalls of Iguazu. However, traveling is a lot of fun but it doesn’t mean you’re living the good life 24/7 and so I decided to tell you about the downsides as well.

Sure, there is absolutely no need to pity ourselves for being able to share this wonderful journey together as a couple and to take as much time as we want to but seriously, not everything that glitters is gold! It’s not like we’re hanging out at sunny beaches all day or experiencing the wildest adventures. Not every day is a sunny day and yes, we have to watch our budget carefully just as all the other travelers have to because we want it to last for long. And therefore we also have to endure crappy food, cheap accomodation or uncomfortable busrides every once in a while.

So this is what happened to us this week which stands so much in contrast to what we’ve done before...

What have we done:

We took buses – a lot of buses! In total we traveled an estimated 1609km within 56hours and 3 nights. During this time, we crossed 3 borders and the northern dustroads of Paraguay, ate lots of bad fastfood&cookies and breathed in tons of dust. Enjoying the moment is a tough challenge at these conditions and we really missed out on great adventures this week but it was necessary to travel such a long distance and we made it!

The greatest moment:

Was when we got off the bus at the terminal in Santa Cruz. After more than 24hours traveling from Asunción, the capital city of Paraguay, to Santa Cruz de la Sierra in Bolivia, dusty roads, no bathroom, and border control in the middle of the night, it really felt like a remedy when we finally arrived. Having a shower and sleeping in an actual bed had never felt this great!

Nein? Dann wird es aber höchste Zeit! ;-)

The funniest moment:

Was me jogging through the streets of Puerto Iguazu with two ice cream cones in my hands. Well, that way we made the bus to Ciudad del Este and we didn’t have to miss out on our dessert. Did you ever walk through emmigration with both your passport and iced cream in your hands? No? Well, you really should! ;-)

Lektion gelernt:

A lesson learned:

You should always, really always get an exit stamp upon leaving Paraguay or any other south american country! Otherwise it can get quite uncomfortable and pricey. Also, a double citizenship, meaning a second passport, might help at first but it can lead towards being denied access to your homecountry. As in Señor Gisberts case, fortunately everything went well but for the next time he knows better and I hope you do too. ;-)

Daumen runter:

Thumps down:

For – I guess you have figured it out by now – endless busrides without aircondition and a bathroom. This is something I could have lived without but well, sometimes you have to do what you gotta do and so I’ll stop complaining for now and turn over to the good parts of this week =)

Daumen hoch:

Thumps up:

For the first Starbucks in Bolivia which has just opened a few months ago. The coffee shop is quite far outside the centre of Santa Cruz but wonderfully decorated and apart from its usual specialties, this Starbucks also offers regional ones like "Dulce de Leche Latte" or "Cuñapes". These cheesy little treats are very popular in Santa Cruz and imagine this – even my bolivian world traveler who absolutely can’t understand my obsession with this company, had to admit that these were the best cuñape he’s ever had! He’d have crossed the whole city again just to have another one of these! :o

Treat of the week:

Was our first original argentinian rumpsteak. As a part-time vegetarian I still felt kind of bad but I really must admit that this was the best steak I’ve ever had!

Funfact:

Did you know that everything, and I mean eeeeverything is closed down on election days in Bolivia, except for the polls?! Sounds weird – but unfortunately it’s true and the reason to our numerous busrides this week. With everything being closed down there’s also no transportation on election day and therefore we had to leave Santa Cruz after just one day so we could make it to Tupiza on time.

This weeks highlight:

My personal highlight of this crazy week were Lucia and her little kitty whom we got to know at the bus terminal in Tarija. She has found the little orphan on the streets but now she’ll never ever let go of it again. If they are not playing around, the little kitty likes to sleep in her sweater or in very rare and exceptional situations, Lucia would let a cat-loving german globetrotter cuddle with her baby. I’m lost for words because these two were just too sweet to be real! =)

Goodbye Rio & Hello Iguazu // The Weekly Update #3

This week, we finally decided to leave our beloved city Rio de Janeiro. On the one hand it was sad to say goodbye as we had already started to feel like home after these almost 3 weeks but on the other hand it was time to head out for a new adventure! On Thursday, we left Rio on a night bus to São Paulo, went for a little sightseeing during the day and continued our journey on another night bus to Foz de Iguaçu. We visited the waterfalls on the brasilian side and then crossed the border to Argentina on the same day. The following day, we visited the argentinian side of the falls from Puerto Iguazu. We were busy bees this weekend - but well, if it smells like an adventure, we go for it!

The greatest moment: was our last time at the beach in Rio and saying goodbye to the Atlantic Ocean for now. It's always time to leave when the moment is at it's best.

Thumps up: for the brasilian transportation company Itapemirim who have the most comfortable long distance busses and the wi-fi is actually working. I can absolutely recommend them to all you travelers out there!

Thumps down: for rain on my bithday. I was so hoping to spend my big day celebrating at the Copacabana and having lots of fresh coconuts and caipirinha but well =( We had to go for Plan B and spend a nice day at Rio's biggest shopping mall, indulged on some sweet treats and exchanged the cocktail plans for a beer on our room at night. Sometimes you really gotta be spontaneous!

Highlight of the week: were our visits to the waterfalls of Iguazu both on the argentinian and brasilian side. Those of you, who've been following this blog for a while do now about my passion for waterfalls and can sure imagine my euphoria for these royal miracles of nature. Also, I can't decide which side I liked more so my recommendation to you is to save your time and budget and visit both the argentinian and brasilian national parks while you're in Iguazu. It's absolutely worth it!!!

Best food of the week: was another brasilian dessert specialty: smashed açai berries! This little palm fruit has been gaining quite some reputation throughout the past years and appears in a lot of healthy food products around the world. Here in Brazil, they smash it and mix it with banana and granola. It tastes weird at first because it's sweet but sour at the same time but once you get used to the flavour you either love it like me and the rest of the Brazilians or you gets sick from it - like poor Luis. In either case - you should definitely give it a try! ;-)

Lesson learned: Even as a spontaneous backpacker you should really do some research. Otherwise, you may end up like Luis and me who again got caught in the "holiday trap" and have a hard time finding accommodation in Puerto Iguazu as everything was sold out already. Next time, we'll do our homework and write down all the holidays of the countries we're planning to visit, so we know whenever it's necessary to book our beds in advance. And you should really do so, too!

Animal encounter: Iguazu national parks are full of these sweet little coatis but beware! Although they look so innocent, they can really bite and they love to steal food - so keep it out of their reach and do not try to touch them!

Funfact:

Brazilian Avocados are the largest I've ever seen! You can easily make one bowl of Guacamole and a breakfast with toast, tomato and eggs for the whole family by using just one single fruit!

Let me take you to Rio // The Weekly Update #1 and #2

It´s been two weeks ago since I boarded the big bird at Frankfurt airport and crossed the Big Pond again to meet my big love, the charming world traveler on the the other side of the world. Ever since, we´ve been wandering the streets of Rio de Janeiro and sipped quite a number of fresh coconuts. It feels absolutely great being here!

Most of you have already shared some of our first impressions on Facebook or Instagram but today I´ll feed you with some more details and colorful pictures which I hope you enjoy:

What have we done?

We´ve walked as much as we never did before in a new city! Lapa, Botafogo, Copacabana and Ipanema, uphill, downhill, into the water and back out - always on our two feet, always keeping an open eye for a new adventure. On this journey, I´ve become quite relaxed about sightseeing as in Rio it isn´t just about the touristy stuff but more about being here and enjoying this beautiful city by the sea. We´re taking a lot of time for breakfast in the morning, then Luis is going out for a run, while I am working on my thesis. I´m usually leaving the house in the late afternoon, when the heat has already dropped, the light is amazing to take pictures and the local people fill the streets with brazilian passion.

The greatest Moment: Seeing each other again after another two months of separation.

Daumen hoch: für Sonnenuntergänge in Ipanema!

Thumps up: for sunset in Ipanema!

Daumen runter: für krank sein auf Reisen. Einfach doof. Und Bachelorarbeiten - die sind erst recht doof!

Thumps down: for being sick while traveling. That sucks. And my Bachelor thesis - which sucks even more!

Highlight of the week: Our field trip to Sugarloaf mountain - we had the greatest views from there!

The best food: Brigadheiros! Yummy little chocolaty brazilien calories bombs that made out of condensed milk, sugar and cocoa and that are sooo tempting and taste like a piece from heaven.

New ritual: The daily coconut! Sipping a fresh coconut each day is a luxury no one should miss out on while being in a tropical country. It's also really good for you as coconut water hydrates your body three times as much as regular water. The best for your skin and soul!

Lesson learned: Parking in brazilian style is not for beginners!

We've been in Rio for 14 days but have already moved places like four times. Starting at an airbnb place in Santa Teresa, we moved to a friend of a friends house in Copacabana, from there we went to a couchsurfers' place in Botafogo, then to the hostel across the street and now, haha, now we're living the high life at a friend of a friends mothers house in a noble suburb called Barra.
