Dining with Crocodiles // The Weekly Update #6

Did you ever wake up in the early morning, crawling out of your moskito net, stumbling on your way to breakfast, rubbing your sleepy eyes and finding yourself face to face with a crocodile in the next moment? ...No? Well in that case you missed the shock of your lifetime. Meeting a crocodile first thing in the morning is giving you quite an adrenaline rush but trust me, on the second day you won't bother anymore and just have a careful look at your "cute" new pet because in the jungle it's really not that special having a crocodile sitting underneath your front porch, waiting for you to have or become breakfast. After all, we didn't end up being breakfast nor dinner and so I can use my chance to tell you about all these fun and scary adventures we've experienced over this past week in the wilderness.

What have we done this week?

This week we went high up in the air, again. From the highest airport in the world we went all the way to the bolivian amazon jungle in Rurrenabaque where we toured the pampas for three days. By boat, we went far into Yacuma National Park and stayed at a real jungle lodge.  Over there it was really like one adventure hunting the next one. Swimming with pink dolphins, hiking for Anacondas, reflecting crocodiles eyes during a night cruise on Rio Yacuma, or fishing piranhas - we were having one adrenaline rush after another and felt like being life on Discovery Channel.

Thumps  down: for our flight delay on Wednesday morning. I know, such things happen and it doesn't mean the end of the world but getting up at 5am plus having a strong nausea from 4200m of altitude made it kind of hard to stay positive. However, three hours later, our plane was finally ready to depart and off we went to the jungle!

Thumps up: for our tour guide Gilbert from Flechatours in Rurrenabaque who knew everything about the jungle, the pampas, its animals and human inhabitants. Like a genius, he maneuvered our boat through the tricky water labyrinth, orienting himself at the trees and the position of the sun. Like a madman, he toyed around with our pet crocodiles, got up at 4:30am to take us out on the river to see the sun rising over the water and to hear how the noise changes at daybreak. I rarely ever had a tour guide who was as commited and motivated and happy to answer all our questions. Thus I can strongly recommend booking with this agency in case you're planning to go to Rurrenabaque in the future.

Highlight of  the Week: was a quick but wonderful encounter with a couple of Tucans who sat down in a tree above us for what felt like five seconds until they took off  and flew away again. For years, I've been admiring these beautiful birds with their black feathers and colorful beaks. Seeing them in open nature has therefore been like another dream come true to me, even though it was just for such a short moment.

A lesson learned: You really don´t have to do everything on the agenda! Especially, if you are freaking-scared of snakes, you really shouldn´t take a walk through the muddy pampas looking for anacondas - even if it is on the agenda! However, in case you decided to go with the crowd nevertheless, you shall do so with dignity and pretend it was the best thing to do at this very moment to walk through the damn mud to find damn anacondas you really don´t want to see. ;-)

Funfact:

Pink dolphins are not just really cute and special but also a swimming life insurance! These fellows are making such a loud noise that chases away other animals such as crocodiles, piranhas, water snakes and other life threatening creatures. Thus it´s always safe to swim where the dolphins are and so we joined them in the water. Unfortunately though, it´s almost impossible to catch them in front of your lense which sadly means, I don´t have a picture for you this time =(

Treat of the Week: Was the Palta a la Reina I had in Rurrenabaque. This dish, served with chicken salad, mayonaise,  potatoes and other vegetables is simply made for avocado-lovers like me. Two years ago, I first ordered it at a restaurant in Cusco, loved it and so I was super pleased to also find it on the menu in Rurrenabaque this week. Now I just have to try preparing it myself at home...

A special Animal Encounter this week was Polly, the charming front desk assistant at Hotel Ambaibo in Rurrenabaque, who has become quite popular on my instagram account and therefore has to be mentioned in this post as well. Polly is the most hard-working parrot I've ever seen. To please her guests, she is both lifeguard at the pool, front desk assistant, portier and observing the breakfast buffet. She also enjoys having deep conversations with each guest and  breaking a pen once in a while. Polly is everywhere but unfortunately one will never find her up in the air. As a young parrot girl, her wings were cut short and she was banned to a life on two feet which she is still handling gracefully. However, it made my heart bleed when I saw some parrots flying past us on the next day in the jungle and I'm still asking myself why it has to be like that? Why do we humans have to rob animals off their freedom in such a cruel way, only to keep them with us?

Bolivias Wild West on Horseback // The Weekly Update #5

This was just another real adventure week as we like it! Like real Cowboys, we jumped into the saddle and rode through Bolivias Wild West for two days. And - you may make an educated guess - we took another night bus, visited both the biggest and the capital city of Bolivia ans fell in love once again.

Why that and a lot more on what we were doing is coming to you in the following lines...

What did we do?

As I mentioned previously, this week we tacked it up and experienced Bolivias Wild West on horseback. Thereby I was able to fulfill one really big dream that had been on my "riders bucks list" for years but sharing this great experience with my charming world traveler made it become even more special. After two days in the saddle, we directly continued our journey on the night bus towards beautiful Sucre. This really must be the prettiest town of Bolivia as it invites everyone with its colonial charm. We used our two days there to recharge and wander around until we had to continue our journey on another night bus so we would make  it to La Paz right on time to spend the Easter holidays with Luis family.

Thumps up: for Señor Gisbert, who has not only agreed to spend two days on horseback but has been absolutely fearless and trusting with his horse and found it quite fun to canter along the way. I think it's save to say that I really do have the best boyfriend in the whole wide world! =)))

Highlight of the week: was finally going fast on a horse again. Every horse friend like me knows this liberating feeling and all not-yet-horse-friends should definitely do it like Señor Gisbert and make up on this amazing experience! =)

*Auaa* =(

A lesson learned: No matter how many years of your life you've spent on horseback, after two days in the saddle your butt really really hurts and taking the night bus right after did not seem like the best decision, but well...*outch* =(

Funfact:

No, even though it sounds logical, La Paz is only the largest but not the capital city of Bolivia. It only holds the seat of the government but the cultural capital is beautiful Sucre with its white houses, green plazas, clean streets and tons of museums. There really is no better place to relax and rest your body after two days in the saddle. =)

Thumps down: for closed museums on public holidays. We really wanted to use the day for some cultural education but no - Casa de la Libertad, Bolivia's National Historic Museum had to be closed. =(

Treat of the week: were the yummy Salteñas by El Patio in Sucre! After having been in the country for about 10 days I've become quite an expert at taste-testing these doughy bolivian treats that are filled with meat or chicken soup. They make both an excellent breakfast or lunch or a nice treat on the go - and El Patio really had the best ones I've had so far! Now I really only need to find out how to make these myself ;-)

The greatest moment: was our arrival in La Paz. When I was there two years ago, I had no idea I would actually return this soon and together with my great love this time. It really makes me very happy to be in his hometown together and it also makes me proud to see how much we've grown together in the past two years, although there were times when no one really believed we could ever make it through our difficulties. =)

I wish you all Happy Easter and lots of fun hunting eggs!

Saludos&Besitos,

Mandy xx
