Lagos de Montebello y Las Cascadas del Chiflon

After spending two rather relaxed days in frosty San Cristobal, we took another tour with Otisa on our very last day in Chiapas. This time, we went to see the blue Lagos de Montebello and the impressive Cascadas del Chiflon.
Lagos de Montebello are a plateau of around 59 little lakes that shine in deep blue, turquoise or even black-red color. The biggest lake is called Tiscao and is situated right off the border to Guatemala-even though it is not much more than a 2hrs drive from San Cristobal. 
We spent all morning visiting various lakes, snapping pictures and walking around but the afternoon we got to spend at Cascadas del Chiflon-yay-some more waterfalls! And you already know how much I love waterfalls ;-) 
Again, these waterfalls are very special because of their shiny turquoise color. Getting to the National park, first thing you do is walking along a bright turquoise little creek until you get to the actual waterfalls. I wish we could have taken a bath there but freezing all week in San Cristobal, we had forgotten about the rest of Mexico being hot and sunny and so we hadn´t brought any bathing suits. Pity!
Although we really enjoyed this tour and as always Otisa has done a great job with everything, I don´t think it is a Must-have. The lakes are pretty to look at but rather unspectacular-it would be better to stick around for a few days in order to go hiking or enjoy water sports to get the best out of this place. Same thing with the waterfalls which would have been a great destination for a whole day trip-as there is so much to see. We hardly had any time to climb all the platforms, try out the zip lines or take a bath in the creek. It´s definitely worth visiting these places but as so often-it´s best done individually and with a lot more time than just a day.
However, our time in Chiapas was up already. Next morning, we left for the airport at 4am in order to catch the plane to Puerto Vallarta, back in Jalisco state. A few more beach days to go =)

Nachdem wir ausnahmsweise mal zwei relativ chillige Tage im frostigen San Cristobal zugebracht hatten, ging es an unserem letzten Tag in Chiapas dann nochmal auf Tour mit Otisa. Diesmal ging es zu den blauen Lagos de Montebello und den beeindruckenden Cascadas del Chiflon.
Die Lagos de Montebelllo sind eine Seenplatte aus ungefähr 59 Seen, die für ihre tiefblaue, teils türkise und an manchen Stellen sogar schwärzlich-rote Färbung bekannt sind. Ihr größter See, der Lago Tziscao ist unmittelbar an der Grenze zu Guatemala gelegen-und trotzdem nur etwa zwei Stunden Fahrt von San Cristobal entfernt.
Während wir den ganzen Morgen und Vormittag damit verbracht haben, ein paar der Seen zu besuchen und Fotos zu schießen, haben wir am Nachmittag dann die Cascadas del Chiflon besucht-juhuuu schon wieder Wasserfälle! Und auch diese sind meiner Meinung nach wieder etwas ganz Besonderes ;-)
Wenn man im Nationalpark ankommt, läuft man erstmal einen halben Kilometer an einem strahlend türkisen Bach entlang, wo man am liebsten direkt drin baden gehen würde. Das wäre theoretisch auch möglich gewesen aber wie so oft, hatten wir nicht damit gerechnet, dass das Wetter außerhalb vom frostigen San Cristobal noch mexikanisch tropisch warm ist, und daher auch keine Badesachen eingepackt. Überhaupt ist mir auf dem Weg-und dann auf den 99Höhenmetern bis zum höchsten Aussichtspunkt so warm geworden, dass ich mich nach und nach aus meinen vielen Kleidungsstücken geschält habe und schließlich wieder sommerlich gut gelaunt in Top und Ballerinas durch die Gegend gesprungen bin. So muss das sein, wenn man in Mexiko ist =)
Theoretisch muss ich dennoch sagen, dass die Tour vielleicht nicht unbedingt ein Muss ist, denn die Seen sind zwar hübsch-aber aus dem Auto betrachtet auch nicht allzu spektakulär. Wer Zeit hat, sollte vielleicht mehrere Tage dort verbringen-man soll in dem Nationalpark sehr schön wandern können und es gibt viele Möglichkeiten dort wassersport zu betreiben. Dasselbe gilt auch für die Cascadas del Chiflon-die sind so oder so toll, aber auch hier bietet es sich an, einen ganzen tag hin zu gehen, denn dann kann man tatsächlich in dem Bach baden und auf alle Aussichtspunkte klettern. Eine Zip-Line gibt es da auch, auf der man einmal über die Wasserfälle "fliegen" kann. Es lohnt sich auf jeden Fall-aber umso mehr, je mehr Zeit man investieren mag.
Für uns war das der letzte Tag in Chiapas-am folgenden Morgen ging es um 4Uhr früh aus den Federn und ab zum Flughafen in Tuxtla Gutierrez. Als nächstes standen noch ein paar Strandtage in Puerto Vallarta vor der Tür. Mehr dazu kommt demnächst! Ich hoffe euch gefallen die Fotos!? =)

Palenque y las cascadas de Chiapas

Today I´ve got another picture-loaded post to share. As I already mentioned several times before, we were always on the go during our time in Chiapas. Just one day after our trip to Cañon del Sumidero,
we already took the next day trip to the waterfalls and the mystical, lost city Palenque.
At 6am, our merciless alarm clock kicked us out of our beds to get ready for a 5hrs drive down to the jungle. first stop were the impressive Cascadas de Agua Azul, which usually glimmer in a shiny turquoise, except if you´re visiting during rain season-as we did-when it rather looks like Cascadas de Agua Chocolate. However, I looove visiting waterfalls in every kind of way and I can never get enough of it-as you can see in today´s pictures. We continued to Misol-ha, where you can usually take a bath underneath the waterfalls but because of the rather "chilly" temperatures in mexican "winter", we unfortunately had to miss out on that experience. I still got to enjoy the impressive view though.
Nevertheless, my highlight of the day inevitably turned out to be our visit to the lost city Palenque. Situated in the middle of the deep mexican jungle, these ancient Maya ruins take you all the way back to childhood stories of great adventurers. It used to be one of the first archaelogical sites discovered in Mexico but actual research has only started in the 1940´s and until today only 5% of the ruins have been revealed while the rest remains covered ny the jungle. Since the public interest in these ruins keeps growing, the site was opened to public, although archaeological research is ongoing and in 1987, UNESCO put it on the list of world heritage status. it has been a part of movies and novels ever since and never lost its reputation for being the "lost city." Since there are just a few tourists out there each day spreading out across the vast area, it can really give you the feeling of being out there alone in the jungle-walking among these ancient buildings, listening to monkeys and parrots howling in the background. We stayed there for around 3hrs but still, there will never be enough time to see all of it as the whole area is so large. We climbed a few of the buildings, took lots of pictures and hiked along a path which took us deeper into the jungle to see even more pretty waterfalls. That way, I probably missed out on my chance to take more impressive pictures of the palace and the other buildings on the site but the good thing is-I´ve got reasons to come back one day. 
This tour was very exhausting because of the long driving. We were on the go from 6am until 10pm but it was so worth it. Furthermore, I really want to recommend our tour operator Otisaas we were really satisfied with the organization of the tour-plus the price of 350Pesos, including all entrance fees was more than reasonable. Visiting these 3 places also is an absolute MUST HAVE on your journey to Chiapas, so go for it and enjoy! =)

Heute habe ich mal wieder einen bilderreichen Beitrag für euch. Wie bereits erwähnt, waren wir auf unserer Reise sehr tatendurstig und auch in Chiapas immer viel unterwegs. Bereits einen Tag nach unserer Tour zum Cañon del Sumidero ging es auf die nächste Tour zu den Wasserfällen und der mystischen Dschungelstadt Palenque.
Schon um 6Uhr morgens klingelte der Wecker erbarmungslos und wir wurden von unserem Reiseveranstalter Otisa vom Hostel abgeholt, um die 5 stündige Fahrt bergrunter in den Dschungel anzutreten. Zuerst ging es zu den Cascadas de Agua Azul, die normalerweise wunderschön türkisblau vor sich hin schimmern, wenn man nicht gerade, wie wir, zur Regenzeit dahin reist, wo sie dann doch eher wie Cascadas de Agua Chocolate aussehen-aber trotzdem noch toll sind. Ich liebe ja Wasserfälle in allen Größen, Formen und Farben und kann mich nie daran satt sehen-von daher bin ich bei dieser Tour mehr als genug auf meine Kosten gekommen, denn weiter ging es dann zu den Misol-ha Fällen, wo wir leider aufgrund der "winterlichen" Temperaturen nicht drin baden konnten-aber auch hier begeisterte mich der Anblick.
Das Highlight des Tages war allerdings der Besuch der Dschungelstadt Palenque, der großen Maya Ruinenstätte mitten im Dschungel, die mich an Abenteuererfilme meiner Kindheit erinnert hat.
Diese Stadt ist eine der ersten Mayaruinen, die je entdeckt wurden und trotzdem begannen ernstzunehmende Forschungsarbeiten hier erst in den 1940er Jahren, wobei bis heute nur etwa 5% der Ruinen freigelegt sind, während der Rest noch vom Dschungel überwuchert ist. Das Interesse der Öffentlichkeit ist jedoch so groß, dass die Stätte für Touristen freigegeben ist, obwohl die Ausgrabungen weiterhin andauern. Diese Ruinenstätte spielte sogar schon in Max Frischs Roman Homo Faber eine Rolle und seit 1987 ist auch die UNESCO mit im Boot und hat die Anlage unter ihren Schutz gestellt. Wirklich viele Touristen kommen hier jedoch nicht hin und die paar Leute die da sind verteilen sich so gut auf das riesige Gelände, dass man das Gefühl hat nahezu allein zu sein-da mitten im Dschungel. So zwischen Affengeschrei und uralten Ruinen-da kommt schon Abenteuerlust auf! Wir waren bestimmt über drei Stunden dort und haben trotzdem bei Weitem nicht alles gesehen. Irgendwann sind wir auch mal von den Ruinen abgekommen und den Wanderpfaden entlang zu weiteren atemberaubend schönen Wasserfällen im Dschungel gefolgt. Dadurch habe ich zwar meine Gelegenheit verpasst, nochmal die Treppen des Großen Palast zu erklimmen, um auch dort Fotos zu machen aber dafür einen guten Grund um irgendwann noch einmal dahin zu fahren!
Auch diesmal kann ich unseren Touranbieter wieder mit gutem Gewissen empfehlen. Für unschlagbare 350 Pesos waren wir von 6Uhr morgens bis 22Uhr abends unterwegs und alle Eintritte waren damit ebenfalls abgedeckt. Da kosten schon allein 5std Busfahrt nach Puerto Vallarta wesentlich mehr. Die viele Fahrerei ist zwar anstrengend-aber man hat innerhalb von einem Tag alles und mit ausreichend Zeit gesehen. Ein absolutes MUSS auf jedermans Chiapasreise! =)

San Cristóbal de las Casas

Today, I´ll leave you with a few impressions of our stay in the beautiful but frosty town of  San Cristóbal de las Casas, where we spent the nights during our trip to Chiapas. At 2100m altitude you reallly can´t expect the usual mexican heat-what a pity! But you can still expect to be absolutely charmed by this pretty little town. 
At frosty 20°C degree  during the day and likely less than 5°C at night, you might wish for a cozy sweater and Uggboots during your stay in San Cristobal but walking the stairs up to the church or having a hot Ponche at the market might work out just as fine. It really is without a doubt one of the most picturesque places in Mexico as you can hopefully recognize by looking at my pictures-even though I have to admit that I´ve been far too lazy at taking pictures these days-big shame on me as it´d have been worth it!
Apart from that, I can´t go without mentioning and highly recommending our wonderful hostel-called the Rossco! It feels like a farm vacation, staying there. A very rustic place with barns that were turned into stylish dorm rooms or little family apartments. Guests are welcome to use the kitchen, turn on a bonfire at night and play with the friendly dogs who are always happy for the attention. Furthermore their prices are more than reasonable at 150Pesos for a dorm room-plus they are so kind to give you the 4th night for free. See for yourself and enjoy-but don´t forget to bring warm clothes! =)  

Heute hab ich noch ein paar kleine Impressionen von der hübschen Stadt San Cristóbal de las Casas für euch, die während unserer Chiapasreise unser frostiges Basislager war. Bei 2100m Höhe hört es eben auch mal auf mit der tropisch-mexikanischen Hitze. Während wir dachten, es könne nach der Hauptstadt kaum noch kälter werden, erlitten wir hier Temperaturschocks von knapp unter 20°C tagsüber und weit unter 5°C nachts-und das ohne Heizung, gedämmte Wände oder gar Winterjacken und kuscheligen Uggboots! Das war schon wirklich grenzwertig!!!
Allerdings muss man sagen, dass es sich doch absolut lohnt, das hübsche Städtchen zu besuchen. Viele kleine Marktplätze, Kirchen und Fußgängerzonen prägen das Antlitz dieses beschaulichen Ortes. Ihr seht es ja selbst an meiner kleinen Fotoauswahl...wobei ich leider zugeben muss, dass ich wieder einmal zum falschen Zeitpunkt von der Fotofaulheit überwältigt wurde-aber ich war eben auch schockgefrostet. ;-)
Ausdrücklich empfehlen möchte ich allerdings auch noch unser Hostel, names Rossco. Das Ambiente ist fantastisch-man kommt sich vor als ob man Ferien auf dem Bauernhof machen würde, nur dass die ehemaligen Ställe in Zimmer für Besucher umgebaut und äußerst stilvoll hergerichtet wurden. Preislich sind sie mit 150 Pesos pro Nacht auch top-und die 4. Nacht gibts netterweise gratis! Schaut es euch an und fühlt euch wohl-vergesst nur die Schlafsäcke und die warmen Sachen nicht!
